Welcome to my blog!
Hi! I’m Anna, a thirty-something former lawyer recently turned freelance copyeditor and blogger, living a life I absolutely love in the Yorkshire countryside with my husband Ste, our newborn daughter Emilia and our little menagerie of animals. I blog about renovating our home – two 1870’s miners’ cottages knocked together – that we bought in December 2014, DIY and crafts (especially of the quick and easy variety), things I’ve cooked or eaten, places I’ve been, holidays, my family and parenting, and life in general. In 2016 we got married so there are a fair few wedding posts, especially DIY and budget ideas, and in 2017 we embarked on another huge adventure – parenthood! I’d love for you to come along for the ride!
Why Anna International?
When I started the blog I was travelling a lot, regularly heading to and from Florence where I lived for three years whilst doing my PhD, and when not travelling for work, I was going on as many holidays as possible. I’ve lived abroad several times for short periods, in Budapest in Hungary, Sofia in Bulgaria, Brussels in Belgium and a small town in Bavaria, Germany, and have collected myriad myriads of international friends over the years who are now spread all over the globe. I was also an international lawyer when I started the blog, so, Anna and International seemed to go pretty well together.
Nowadays, I am living a country-girl life in rural England, and spare money is spent on house renovations rather than lots of trips abroad, though I still fit in as many of those as possible. I feel sometimes like I should change my blog name to Anna At Home but it is what it is!
Why a blog?
While living abroad in Italy, Facebook updates and a photostream of consciousness were my way of keeping friends and family at home up to date with my life, and since moving home I’ve missed having the excuse to populate the internet with my inane chatter. So, what better excuse than a blog? I started out with the intention of giving it a try, and then I realised I absolutely loved it. Having to generate material for posts has meant I’ve finally got around to trying out this or that recipe, to upcycling that bit of furniture that’s been in the garage for months, and to properly documenting my travels. An unexpected benefit is the wonderful blogging community and I have lots of lovely new friends who understand that I can’t start my lunch until it’s been properly photographed, and totally understand that tidying just involves moving everything out of shot!
What do I blog about?
This blog is basically about my life, so anything can happen really! However, given that we are currently renovating our house, this is a strong theme, along with lots of DIYs and crafts to make it a home. I love cooking and can often be found in the kitchen experimenting with recipes, baking sourdough bread or cakes, or hosting parties. I also love to explore our surroundings, so there’s posts about life in Yorkshire and places to visit, but also about our holidays and travel. And I love coffee, so there’s a few posts about that. And you can find a sprinkling of our pets (an Italian rescue whippet cross, a pug, and Julian and Tarquin the rescue cats) in nearly every post – they love to photobomb!
Here are some of my favourite posts:
